Public debate on major infrastructure projects

When major infrastructure projects are being designed, the contribution of local areas and communities is essential. In Italy, the law provides for the Public Debate, a structured process of information and discussion that gathers observations, criticism and proposals from all the stakeholders involved.

Experience with the Public Debate has shown that it delivers concrete benefits:

• better information and awareness, for designers and citizens alike, about the expected impact of the works;
• higher-quality projects, above all in how they relate to the surrounding area, thanks to the integration of the information gathered and a feasibility test of the proposed solutions;
• conflict prevention, through transparent and participatory dialogue among all stakeholders.
