A public debate on the expansion of Florence Airport

The future of Amerigo Vespucci Airport to be decided by a participatory process

Toscana Aeroporti Spa, the sole management company of Florence and Pisa airports, has chosen Avventura Urbana (AU) to coordinate the public debate on the Airport Development Plan for Florence’s Amerigo Vespucci Airport.

The 2035 Masterplan was presented and discussed during five public meetings, three specialist meetings and two participatory site visits held between November 2022 and January 2023. The debate centred on the project to expand the existing infrastructure with a new runway and a new passenger terminal, to achieve an ecological and digital transition, according to the following objectives:

• increase the airport’s environmental and social sustainability;
• create structural resilience;
• improve the level of the services offered;
• optimise intermodality.

The participatory process, coordinated by Alberto Cena (Chair of the Avventura Urbana Board of Directors) with assistance from the team specialised in implementing public debate tools, was attended by over 400 people. AU was also responsible for creating and updating the website and multi-channel communication, both online and offline, as well as social media, which was viewed by over 350,000 users.
